American singer Ciara has made history as the first person in the world to be granted Beninese citizenship under a new nationality initiative.

The Grammy-winning star shared the news on Sunday, July 28, through her Instagram page.

She revealed that the ceremony took place on Friday, July 26, which coincided with the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.

Ciara was officially received by President Patrice Talon, the Office of Benin Tourism, and the people of Benin in what she described as a moment she would never forget.

“To be welcomed by His Excellency President Patrice Talon and the beautiful people of Benin is a moment I will never forget,” she wrote.

The singer ended her post with a proud declaration in French, saying: “Je suis béninoise” — “I am Beninese.”
