Social media personality VeryDarkMan has reacted to the newly released Nollywood movie VeryDarkBlackMan, which is based on his life.
The film, which premiered four days ago on YouTube and has already attracted over 103,000 views, stars veteran actor Gentle Jack in the lead role.
In an Instagram video, VeryDarkMan said he appreciates the recognition and is flattered that a movie was made about him so early in his career. However, he expressed disappointment over the way his story was portrayed.
He criticized Gentle Jack for not reaching out to him before playing the role, saying that doing so would have helped tell a more accurate version of his life.
“So about this trending movie, baba Gentle Jack had to play me, I have a problem with it. To be honest, I’m not happy. I even cringed while watching it,” he said.
The activist said he has been in the spotlight for about three years and was surprised that a biopic had already been made about him, while many legends haven’t had their stories told yet.
“That is something big, it means they see I’ve been trying,” he added. “But my issue is with Gentle Jack. You’re a legend. If you had sent me a message, I would have responded in 30 minutes. There’s no way I’d ignore it.”
VeryDarkMan said he deliberately waited until the film was out so that people could understand his point of view. He said he would have shared everything about his life — including his past, controversial actions, and the reasons behind his activism — if only the actor or filmmakers had asked.
“I’m not interested in the money. I would’ve told you everything, even the things people judge me for — the adult content, the women I was involved with, everything. I don’t pretend to be a saint.”
He accused the film’s creators of turning his story and that of fellow personality Koko P into a joke instead of telling it with depth and truth.
