Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has started treatment for an ankle sprain he sustained while playing for the Super Eagles in their 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday.

Osimhen was forced off midway through the first half after a challenge from Rwanda’s Claude Niyomugabo. He missed Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa in Bloemfontein as a result.

Super Eagles doctors had initially diagnosed the injury as a shin bruise, but Osimhen later returned to Turkey for further tests with his club Galatasaray.

“Examinations showed a moderate ankle sprain with tension and bleeding in the ligaments. Treatment has already started so he can return to the pitch as soon as possible,” Galatasaray team doctor Dr Yener Slim said in a statement on the club’s website.

On Saturday, Osimhen was replaced by Cyriel Dessers, while substitute Tolu Arokodare scored the decisive goal in the 51st minute to secure Nigeria’s win.

It is still unclear whether Osimhen will be fit for Galatasaray’s league game against Eyüpspor this weekend.

The 25-year-old joined Galatasaray permanently from Napoli this summer in a €75m deal after a successful loan spell. He has scored two goals in three league matches so far, with his team leading the table on 12 points.
