WCQ: Gernot Rohr says South Africa playing ‘at home’ with FIFA’s blessing

Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has thrown a jab at South Africa, insisting the Bafana Bafana hold the upper hand in the race to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Rohr, the qualifying table is tilted because South Africa have enjoyed an unusual advantage — seven of their 10 games on home soil.

This came after Lesotho and Zimbabwe, lacking FIFA-approved stadiums, hosted their “home” matches against Bafana Bafana in South Africa, just across the border.

“South Africa will play twice at home against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. So, seven matches from the 10 they played in South Africa. That is a big advantage,” Rohr told ESPN. “Meanwhile, our team has had to play away games only for two and a half years. It’s crazy.”

South Africa were recently docked three points by FIFA for fielding ineligible midfielder Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho in March, allowing Benin to leapfrog them to the top of Group C on goal difference. But Rohr still believes the road remains rough for the Cheetahs.

“FIFA decided to deduct three points, but it will still be very difficult for us because we have to go to Rwanda and then to Uyo to finish,” he added.

Benin, with 14 points just like South Africa, are eyeing their first-ever World Cup appearance. But with a final showdown against Rwanda and Rohr’s former team, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, the battle is far from over.
