Nigerian singer Chukwuka Ekweani, popularly known as CKay, has revealed that he dropped out of university at 100 level to fully pursue his music career, defying his parents’ wishes.
Speaking during a livestream on Twitch with streamer Caterefe, the ‘Love Nwantiti’ hitmaker said he ran away from home in Kaduna at the age of 19 after his parents disapproved of his music ambitions.
“My parents didn’t want me to do music, so I ran away from home in Kaduna when I was 19. I came down to Lagos to chase my passion in music,” CKay recounted.
He explained that upon arriving in Lagos, he initially stayed with a friend before moving into a one-room apartment, earning a living as a producer across four different studios.
“At some point, I had to drop out of university at just 100 level to focus on music,” he added.
CKay first gained prominence in 2018 with the release of ‘Container’, but his 2019 single, ‘Love Nwantiti’, became a global sensation, breaking multiple African records. The original version has now surpassed a billion streams on Spotify.
