Nigeria international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has named his top three shot-stoppers in global football, crowning Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as the current standard-bearer. The Udinese goalkeeper, who plays his club football in Italy’s Serie A, was asked to evaluate and rank the finest talents in his position.

Okoye immediately singled out Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, and Donnarumma as the elite trio operating at the pinnacle of the sport. While his formal ranking placed Ter Stegen at the very top based on personal history, Okoye admitted that Donnarumma’s current form sets him apart from the rest of the world.

“For me, No. 1 is Ter Stegen, then Courtois and Donnarumma… But right now, I think Donnarumma is the strongest goalkeeper. At the moment, he’s the best. He is on a different level.” Maduka Okoye said.

Childhood inspiration gives Ter Stegen the historical edge

Okoye explained that his decision to rank Ter Stegen as his nominal number one stems from their shared history in German football. During Okoye’s developmental years at Borussia Mönchengladbach’s academy, a young Ter Stegen was already making waves in the club’s Under-19 setup, serving as an immediate role model for the aspiring Nigerian keeper.

However, looking strictly at modern performance on the pitch, Okoye conceded that the Manchester City star has eclipsed the competition. He emphasized that Donnarumma’s current physical dominance and commanding presence in goal make him the strongest and most imposing goalkeeper in the game today.
