Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has publicly opposed the idea of Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen becoming the permanent captain of the Super Eagles. The leadership of the national team has been a major point of discussion in recent years following the international retirements of veteran skippers William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa.
While Osimhen’s name was heavily suggested by fans and media to take over the recognized leadership role, Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was eventually appointed as the Super Eagles captain, with Osimhen and Moses Simon named as vice-captains. Speaking on the matter, Adepoju firmly backed the decision to look past the star striker for the primary armband, explaining that leading a national team requires a specific temperament that goes far beyond on-pitch talent.
“Leadership requires more than talent. A captain must possess playing quality, leadership ability, emotional control, and the capacity to represent and unite the team both on and off the pitch. Anyone who cannot tolerate others or control their behaviour cannot effectively lead.”Mutiu Adepoju said.
Character and tolerance prioritized over star power
Adepoju emphasized that an elite goalscoring record does not automatically translate into effective team leadership. In his view, a captain must serve as a unifying figure who can command the respect of a diverse squad, maintain absolute composure under immense pressure, and represent the nation with dignity at all times.
By stating that anyone unable to tolerate others or control their behavior cannot lead effectively, the former international player directly challenged Osimhen’s readiness for the ultimate leadership role. The critique suggests that while Osimhen’s passion and quality as a world-class forward are undisputed, his emotional maturity remains a sticking point, justifying his current placement behind Ndidi in the team’s leadership hierarchy.
