England were left frustrated on Tuesday night after Ghana held them to a goalless draw in their second Group L match of the 2026 World Cup at Gillette Stadium.
The Three Lions dominated possession but struggled to break down a disciplined and compact Ghana side, as Carlos Queiroz’s Black Stars produced a stubborn defensive display to earn a valuable point.
The result halted England’s flying start to the tournament and delayed their push for early qualification to the knockout stage.
England and Ghana now sit level at the top of Group L with four points each, with one round of matches left to play.
Ghana Shut Down England’s Attack
After watching England punish Croatia with clinical attacking football in their opening game, Queiroz set up Ghana in a rigid 5-4-1 formation.
The plan worked.
Ghana stayed compact, closed the spaces quickly and denied England the passing lanes that had made them dangerous in their first match.
Thomas Partey returned to Ghana’s midfield after missing the opening game against Panama, and his presence helped the Black Stars block the supply line to England’s attacking players.
Jude Bellingham and Elliot Anderson struggled to find rhythm as Ghana’s midfield and defence worked tirelessly to frustrate the Three Lions.
Kane Starved Of Service
Harry Kane, who was chasing a milestone goal to overtake Gary Lineker as England’s all-time top World Cup scorer, endured a difficult night.
The England captain was starved of service for most of the match, with Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku keeping close watch on him.
Although England saw more of the ball, they failed to turn their possession into clear chances.
Thomas Tuchel grew increasingly agitated on the touchline as Ghana continued to frustrate his side.
Tuchel Turns To Saka
In the second half, Tuchel made changes in search of a breakthrough.
Bukayo Saka came on for Anthony Gordon, while Nico O’Reilly replaced Djed Spence as England tried to inject more urgency into their play.
The changes briefly lifted England’s intensity.
Bellingham began to find some space in the inside-right channel, while Declan Rice saw a powerful effort deflected just over Benjamin Asare’s crossbar.
But Ghana remained organised and refused to open up.
Black Stars Hold Firm
Ghana also tried to hurt England on the counter-attack, using the pace of Iñaki Williams and the strength of Antoine Semenyo.
However, their final ball let them down on several occasions.
In the closing stages, the Black Stars dropped deeper and focused on protecting the point.
Late introductions, including Kojo Oppong and Baba Rahman, helped Ghana run down the clock and see out the draw.
The result leaves both teams in a strong but unsettled position heading into their final group matches.
