Anwuli Ekubo-Okwareke, wife of late Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo, has paid an emotional tribute to him, describing him as her strength, answered prayer and greatest companion.
Her tribute was contained in the funeral pamphlet released during the actor’s burial rites in Arochukwu, Abia State.
In the deeply moving tribute, Anwuli reflected on their love, shared memories, private jokes, family bonds and faith journey before Ekubo’s death.
‘You Held Me Together’
Anwuli recalled how Ekubo stood by her during one of the most painful moments of her life — the death of her mother.
According to her, the actor became her anchor when grief almost overwhelmed her.
“When my mother passed a year ago, you were my anchor. You held me together during a season where everything felt heavy,” she wrote.
She said his love gave her the strength to continue during that difficult period.
Wife Recalls Their Private Bond
Anwuli also reflected on the affectionate names and private language they shared as husband and wife.
She said before names such as “Pookie” and “Pookstar” became part of their relationship, Ekubo had first called her “Asa” and “Nwa,” names she said later became part of her identity within his family.
She described their marriage as one filled with humour, intimacy and deep emotional understanding.
According to her, many of their happiest moments were built around their playful conversations in Igbo, personal slang and jokes that only both of them understood.
‘You Became My Sunshine’
The grieving widow said a simple childhood song, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,” became a special expression of their bond.
She described Ekubo as her “sunshine” and “answered prayer,” saying his absence has left a painful emptiness in her life.
She admitted that she still finds herself reaching for him in different ways, only to remember that he is no longer there.
Notes Around The House
Anwuli said Ekubo’s love was not only expressed in big moments but also in quiet, thoughtful gestures.
She recalled how he paid attention to little details, remembered things people casually mentioned and showed affection in ways that stayed with her.
One of the memories she said she would continue to treasure was the handwritten notes he left around their home.
She said she often found the notes in drawers, on mirrors and in places only she would check, describing them as small messages from him to her.
Faith, Prayer And Marriage
The tribute also highlighted the couple’s shared faith.
Anwuli described their marriage as a spiritual journey built on prayer, trust in God and constant dependence on divine guidance.
She said no conversation was too ordinary to be brought before God, adding that Ekubo’s personal faith strengthened her own relationship with God.
“You spent your life trusting God. You pointed so many people back to Him, including me,” she wrote.
‘Being Your Wife Was My Honour’
Anwuli said being married to Ekubo remained one of the greatest honours of her life.
She said the actor mattered deeply to many people, which was why his death had left such a huge wound in the hearts of those who loved him.
She, however, expressed hope that his story did not end in grief, saying she believed he had returned to God.
“Being your wife was the greatest honour. I will always be grateful that, of all the people in the world, I was the one who got to share this life with you,” she wrote.
She ended the tribute by describing him as her “Dadaa,” her “sunshine” and her “favourite human being.”
Ekubo Buried In Abia
Ekubo died in Lagos on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40, following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
His family had described his illness as a brief but courageous battle.
The actor was buried in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State, in June, with family members, colleagues, friends and fans paying their final respects.
His death shocked Nollywood and his many admirers, especially as he had been largely absent from public life and social media since late 2024.
Ekubo was widely known for his roles in several Nollywood productions and remained one of the industry’s most recognisable faces.
