Nigerian filmmaker and actress Biodun Stephen recently took to Instagram to issue a strong reminder to parents: just because a child is financially supporting the household, it does not mean they should assume the role of the parent.
In her post, she acknowledged that life’s circumstances sometimes force children to become the primary provider. Yet she emphasized that financial responsibility should never equate to handing over the “baton of parenting.” In her words:
“Indeed, life happens, and a child becomes the provider of a home. But that should never make parents hand the baton of parenting to the said child.”
Stephen’s message urges parents to retain their guiding role maintaining emotional leadership, discipline, decision-making and accountability regardless of any reversed financial dynamics. Parents might rely on children for bills or support, but they remain responsible for nurturing, setting boundaries and shaping family dynamics
