Former AC Milan captain and Italy great Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66, prompting tributes from across the football world.
Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano announced Baresi’s death in a post on X on Friday morning.
“Sad news from Italy as Franco Baresi has passed away this morning at 66 years old,” Romano wrote.
He described the former defender as “an absolute legend of the game” who influenced several generations through his performances for Milan and Italy.
Real Madrid also issued an official statement expressing condolences to Baresi’s family, former teammates and AC Milan.
The club described him as one of the greatest figures in Italian and world football.
Baresi’s remarkable one-club career
Baresi spent his entire professional club career with AC Milan, making 719 appearances between 1977 and 1997.
During his two decades at the club, he won three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, three European Super Cups, six Italian league titles and four Italian Super Cups.
His longevity, leadership and commitment to a single club established him as one of football’s most respected defenders.
Baresi also made 81 appearances for the Italian national team and participated in three FIFA World Cups.
He was part of the Italy squad that won the 1982 World Cup in Spain. The final was played at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Baresi later captained the Azzurri at the 1994 World Cup, leading them to the final before they lost to Brazil on penalties.
“Real Madrid wishes to express its condolences and affection to his family and loved ones, his teammates, and AC Milan, the club of his life,” the Spanish club said.
Clubs, former teammates, players and supporters have continued to pay tribute to Baresi, remembering both his achievements and humility.
“Franco Baresi has passed away at the age of 66. Rest in peace,” Real Madrid added.
