AFCON 2025: CAF strips Senegal, hands Morocco title winner

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sent shockwaves across the continent after stripping Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarding it to Morocco.

In a stunning verdict, CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the final match of the tournament, invoking Article 84 of the AFCON regulations.

As a result, the final — initially contested between Senegal and the host nation — has now been officially recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of Morocco.

The decision overturns the on-field outcome of the fiercely contested clash and hands the trophy to the Moroccan side through regulatory enforcement.

With the ruling, the Moroccan Football Federation is now formally recognised as champions of Africa, sealing the title under disciplinary provisions rather than on the pitch.

Although CAF has yet to release full details behind the forfeiture, such decisions are typically linked to breaches of competition rules, including misconduct, regulatory violations, or failure to comply with match protocols.

The move signals CAF’s firm stance on enforcing its statutes and preserving the integrity of its competitions — but it has also sparked outrage and intense debate across the football community.

The controversial decision is expected to trigger strong reactions, particularly in Senegal, where hopes of another continental triumph have now been dramatically dashed.
