Manchester City’s hopes of retaining their Premier League title suffered a major blow after a dramatic 3-3 draw with Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on May 4, 2026. While a stoppage-time strike from Jeremy Doku salvaged a point for City, a second-half collapse handed the title race back to Arsenal, who are now just three wins away from ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League crown.

City’s Early Dominance, But Defensive Woes Hand Everton Lifeline

Pep Guardiola’s side seemed to be cruising toward victory after a dominant first half. City’s pressure was relentless, and their efforts were rewarded just two minutes before halftime when Rayan Cherki set up Doku, whose stunning curling shot beat Jordan Pickford and found the top corner of the net.

However, despite their first-half dominance, City failed to keep their composure after the break. The second half saw Everton capitalize on defensive mistakes, with Thierno Barry scoring twice and Jake O’Brien heading in a third to put the Toffees in control.

City’s Defensive Errors Prove Costly

Twice, Manchester City failed to heed the warning signs as Everton continued to press for an equalizer. Gianluigi Donnarumma parried an effort from Iliman Ndiaye into a dangerous area, but Merlin Rohl was slow to react, letting the opportunity slip away. Minutes later, an error from Matheus Nunes allowed Ndiaye another chance, but the City goalkeeper was equal to the task.

When the equalizer finally came, it was a result of yet another City blunder. Marc Guehi’s underhit passback gifted Barry a simple chance to slot home past the stranded Donnarumma.

Minutes later, another casual mistake by City saw Abdukodir Khusanov lose possession, leading to a corner from which Jake O’Brien powered a header into the net, giving Everton a 2-1 lead.

Barry then added a third from a deflected cross as City’s defense continued to unravel in the face of a rapid Everton counterattack.

Haaland and Doku’s Late Heroics Keep City’s Title Hopes Alive

Just as it seemed City were headed for defeat, they found a lifeline. From the restart, Mateo Kovacic played in Erling Haaland, who calmly reduced the deficit to 3-2. Then, with time running out, Doku’s dramatic stoppage-time strike leveled the game, leaving Everton’s hopes of European football in tatters but keeping Manchester City’s title race alive—albeit with a huge challenge ahead.

Arsenal Now in the Driver’s Seat

Arsenal now find themselves in a commanding position, five points clear of City with three games to go. The Gunners’ next match takes them to relegation-threatened West Ham, followed by a home clash with Burnley and a final-day visit to Crystal Palace. With City struggling to recover from their defensive collapse, Arsenal only need to win their remaining fixtures to claim the title.

This result has once again increased the pressure on Guardiola’s side, who have one game in hand but will need to find a way to overcome their defensive frailties if they are to secure a seventh Premier League title in nine years.
