Nigerian music star Ayra Starr has opened up about the personal and artistic evolution behind her new album Starrgirl, revealing how she chose to prioritize her music over a toxic relationship and push past the commercial expectations of passive listeners.
Moving beyond the sound of her previous projects, the singer emphasized her commitment to creative freedom and experimenting with new genres.

Starr explained that her new track Where Do We Go was born from a secretive, stagnant relationship that began affecting her personal growth. Choosing her art over a toxic dynamic, she poured those complex feelings into a danceable heartbreak anthem. Beyond her personal life, the singer also addressed the pressure to repeat past hits, declaring that she refuses to let industry expectations limit her growth.
“You keep accepting things lower than your standard, and that influences every single thing in your life,” Starr said regarding her past relationship. “I picked my priorities and what was most important to me. And that relationship wasn’t as important as the music.”
Addressing the creative direction of her new project, she added: “You’re stuck between creating for the passive listeners and creating for your core fans who want you to do more… But I’m not meant to conform. It’s just not who I am. I will rebel against every single preconception and every stereotype.”
