Nigerian comedian, Lawrence Oluwaseyitan, popularly known as Seyi Law, has apologised following the backlash that trailed his recent comment on kidnapping in Nigeria.

The comedian had stated during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast that the country is safer now than it was 10 years ago, despite persistent cases of terrorism and kidnapping across parts of Nigeria.

His remark sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians accusing him of downplaying the severity of insecurity and the painful experiences of victims.

Reacting via his Instagram page, Seyi Law admitted that his statement was insensitive and acknowledged the hurt it may have caused.

“My fellow Nigerians, I owe you this and more. I’m sincerely sorry for such an insensitive statement that I made on The Honest Bunch podcast. I’m not someone who would be too proud or very insensitive to apologise when he makes mistakes,” he wrote.

He further stated that upon reflection, he realised his comment did not adequately consider those who have suffered from kidnapping.

“I had looked at that statement and I think it is quite insensitive to those who have had issues with kidnapping. And I want to sincerely and unreservedly tender an apology to those whom that statement has hurt. I believe that statement is very insensitive,” he added.

The apology comes amid ongoing public debate over insecurity in the country.
