Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of 19-year-old English midfielder Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland on a five-year deal that runs until 2030.
The Bundesliga club announced the deal on Tuesday, which was the final day of the FIFA Club World Cup transfer window. Jobe joins Dortmund five years after his older brother Jude Bellingham made the same move from England.
Dortmund reportedly paid around €33 million ($37 million), with another €5 million in possible bonuses. This is the highest upfront transfer fee in the club’s history.
"I'm very happy to be a Borussia Dortmund player now and to fight for titles with this great club," said Jobe. "I want to grow with the team, give my best every day, and I can’t wait to wear the black and yellow at the FIFA Club World Cup."
Dortmund’s sports chief Lars Ricken praised Jobe’s talent and attitude.
“Jobe is a very talented player with maturity beyond his age. He fits our philosophy of developing young players and giving them a chance at the highest level,” Ricken said. “His hunger, energy and professionalism will benefit the team.”
Jobe, who plays for England’s U21 team, had a strong season at Sunderland, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 40 games. He played a key role in helping the club return to the Premier League.
In a nod to his own identity, he will continue to wear just ‘Jobe’ on his jersey, as he did at Sunderland, to distinguish himself from his famous older brother.
Jobe’s arrival in Dortmund could lead to a face-off with Jude Bellingham at the Club World Cup in the U.S., if Dortmund meet Real Madrid in the knockout stage.
