Super Eagles players and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have praised captain William Troost-Ekong after he announced his retirement from international football on Thursday. His decision comes just two weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco.
The 32-year-old defender shared the news in an emotional video on social media, ending his 10-year career with Nigeria. His retirement follows the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after losing to DR Congo on penalties.
Troost-Ekong made his debut for Nigeria in 2015 under the late coach Stephen Keshi. He described playing for the Super Eagles as “the greatest privilege” of his life.
“Every time I wore the Super Eagles shirt, I remembered how it all started,” he said. “Becoming captain was beyond my dreams.”
The centre-back thanked fans, coaches and teammates for their support. He also celebrated his achievements with the national team — 83 caps, five major tournaments, and three medals.
One of his biggest moments came at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where he captained Nigeria to the final, scored three goals, and was named Player of the Tournament.
Troost-Ekong said he felt it was time to hand over the captaincy and give others the chance to lead.
Following the announcement, tributes poured in:
- Cyriel Dessers called him a “Legend.”
- Ola Aina wrote: “My champion!!!”
- Ademola Lookman praised him as a “Leader.”
- CAF posted: “Legends remain… It’s been a pleasure, captain.”
Ekong was recently included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for AFCON 2025, but will no longer take part in the competition. Nigeria will now go into the tournament without one of their most experienced players.
Troost-Ekong, who was born in the Netherlands, played for their youth teams before choosing to represent Nigeria. He played at the 2018 World Cup and helped the Super Eagles win bronze at AFCON 2019.
He ends his international career with 83 matches and eight goals for the Super Eagles.
