Nigeria ended their campaign at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 with a 2–0 victory over Congo in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, but the win was not enough to keep them in the tournament.

Goals from Anas Yusuf in the 56th minute and Sikiru Alimi in stoppage time gave the Super Eagles their first points in Group D.

However, their exit was confirmed after Sudan and Senegal played out a goalless draw in Kampala. Both sides finished on five points each to qualify for the quarter-finals, while Nigeria ended third on three points. Congo finished bottom with two.

Coach Eric Chelle’s team had struggled earlier in the group stage, losing their first two matches and conceding five goals. Despite Tuesday’s improved performance, the damage had already been done.

Congo, who also needed a win to advance, wasted several chances before Charles Atipo was sent off in added time. Moments later, Alimi’s header sealed Nigeria’s win.

Sudan topped the group on goal difference (+4), followed by Senegal (+1).

Nigeria now head home, while Sudan and Senegal continue their unbeaten run into the knockout stages.
