Chelsea are close to finalising the signing of talented young striker Liam Delap, with only a few contract details left to sort out between the club and his representatives.
According to well-known football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have decided to trigger Delap’s £30 million release clause. The official communication to complete the deal is expected soon.
The 21-year-old, who has impressed with his performances, is said to be excited by the opportunity to play under Chelsea’s new head coach Enzo Maresca. The chance to feature in next season’s UEFA Champions League also helped convince him to join the London club.
Romano posted on social media: “Chelsea are closing in on Liam Delap deal as details of the long-term contract are being completed with his agents. Enzo Maresca appreciation and Champions League football made the difference as Chelsea are set to activate £30m release clause. Just waiting for formal communication now.”
Earlier, he added that Delap prefers Chelsea’s project and had positive talks with the club this week. With agreement almost complete, Chelsea are expected to finalise the move soon.
Delap, currently at Manchester City, spent last season on loan at Hull City, where he showed great promise. His move to Chelsea marks another big step in his career.
