Disney says new TikTok deal brings movie clips to short-form video

Disney and TikTok have finalized an agreement allowing content creators to feature official clips from Disney films including properties from Star Wars, Toy Story, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in their short-form videos. The initiative will launch first in the United States before expanding internationally, with featured content also set to appear on Disney’s own short-form platform, Verts.

Strategic pivot following OpenAI partnership collapse

While financial terms were undisclosed, the agreement comes shortly after the cancellation of a $1 billion deal between Disney and OpenAI, which would have enabled users to generate AI videos using Disney characters prior to OpenAI shutting down its Sora tool in March. Media analysts view the TikTok partnership as a direct effort by Disney to secure its presence in user-generated content following that setback.

“Today, fans are celebrating our stories in entirely new ways,” Disney chief marketing and brand officer Asad Ayaz said, noting that TikTok’s recommendation algorithm holds unique power to influence which characters, scenes, or classic franchises suddenly resurface in popular culture.

The deal includes a jointly run program designed to boost selected creator videos and offer exclusive event access. However, industry experts caution that Disney will need strict moderation guardrails to curate featured content, particularly given ongoing European regulatory scrutiny around platform safety.
