Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Egypt in a friendly match on Tuesday.
The game was played in Cairo as part of preparations for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The tournament, which kicks off on April 27 and ends on May 18, will be hosted in Egypt.
Nigeria took the lead early in the 10th minute when Kparobo Arierhi scored after receiving a well-placed pass from Bidemi Amole. Egypt fought back and equalized in the 65th minute through Ahmed Kaabaka.
However, Nigeria regained the lead in the 83rd minute after Divine Oliseh was fouled inside the penalty area. Precious Benjamin stepped up and converted the penalty to seal the win for the Flying Eagles.
The victory boosts Nigeria’s confidence as they settle in Egypt for the tournament. The Flying Eagles, who have won the title seven times, are placed in Group B alongside Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya.
Their first match will be against Tunisia on Thursday.
The top four teams from this year’s competition will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19.
