Funk legend Sly Stone dies at 82: music world mourns a pioneer

The music industry is reeling from the loss of Sly Stone, the iconic frontman of Sly and the Family Stone, who passed away at 82. 

According to sources, Stone died peacefully on June 9, 2025, surrounded by his three children and loved ones after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other health issues. 

Known for revolutionizing funk, pop, and rock with hits like “Everyday People” and “Dance to the Music,” Stone’s groundbreaking work with his racially and gender-diverse band left an unforgettable mark. Fans are heartbroken, but his family finds comfort in his enduring legacy, including a recently completed screenplay about his life, following his 2024 memoir.
