English defender Lloyd Kelly scored deep into stoppage time to earn Juventus a dramatic 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The centre-back, who joined Juve from Newcastle in the summer, had earlier conceded a penalty that put Dortmund 4-2 up. But after Dusan Vlahovic pulled one back in the 94th minute, Kelly rose highest two minutes later to head in the equaliser from the Serbian striker’s cross.

All eight goals came in the second half, making it only the second Champions League match in history to see that many goals scored after half-time. The first was Bayern Munich’s 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb last season.

At half-time, there had been little sign of the chaos to come, with both sides cancelling each other out in a goalless first 45 minutes.

How do you comment on a match with eight goals scored in the second half? You tell me,” Juventus coach Igor Tudor said after the game. “In football, it’s never over, and we did well to believe until the end.

Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: “Two teams played outstandingly well in the second half. It was open, back and forth, and fantastic for the fans. Overall, I’m satisfied with the performance, even if the end was tough to take.

How the goals went in

  • 51’ – Karim Adeyemi broke the deadlock for Dortmund with a precise finish into the far corner.
  • 62’ – Juve hit back quickly through Kenan Yildiz, who curled a brilliant strike from distance.
  • 64’ – Felix Nmecha restored Dortmund’s lead with another fine effort into the top corner.
  • 66’ – Vlahovic levelled again after breaking through on goal.
  • 72’ – Yan Couto put Dortmund ahead for the third time with a low drive.
  • 80’ – Ramy Bensebaini converted from the spot after Kelly handled in the box, making it 4-2.
  • 90+4’ – Vlahovic pulled one back for Juve with a shot off the post.
  • 90+6’ – Kelly redeemed himself with a late header to snatch a point.

The thrilling draw leaves both teams with work to do in their group, but it was a night that will be remembered for its breathless second half.
