Malawi will face Cameroon in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final after both teams secured contrasting semi-final victories on Wednesday.
Malawi defeated Algeria 3-1, while Cameroon overcame hosts Morocco 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw.
Tabitha Chawinga scored twice for Malawi against Algeria, with her sister Temwa Chawinga contributing the third goal.
The victory secured Malawi’s place in Sunday’s WAFCON final and continued an impressive tournament for the Chawinga sisters.
Cameroon Goalkeeper Michaely Bihina Stars in WAFCON Shootout
Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina emerged as the hero of the second semi-final after saving four Moroccan penalties.
Myriam Maéva Nyadjou subsequently converted the decisive spot kick to send Cameroon into the final and end Morocco’s title hopes on home soil.
Despite their semi-final defeats, Morocco and Algeria joined finalists Malawi and Cameroon in qualifying for next summer’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Malawi and Algeria will make their first appearances at the global tournament.
Morocco will compete at the Women’s World Cup for the second time after reaching the round of 16 in 2023.
Cameroon will return to the competition after previously appearing at the 2015 and 2019 editions.
Malawi and Cameroon will now compete for the WAFCON title when they meet in Sunday’s final.
