Mozambique on Sunday created history at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after securing their first-ever win at the tournament, following an exciting Group F clash against Gabon in Morocco.

The Mambas, who had gone 16 matches without a victory at AFCON finals, showed resilience and attacking intent as they edged Gabon 3-2 at the Stade d’Agadir.

Faizal Bangal opened the scoring for Mozambique in the 37th minute with a powerful header from a corner, before Geny Catamo doubled the lead five minutes later from the penalty spot.

Gabon talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back deep into first-half stoppage time, reacting quickest to a rebound to keep the Panthers in the contest.

Mozambique restored their two-goal advantage early in the second half when Diogo Calila headed home in the 52nd minute after a well-delivered cross from Witi.

Gabon responded in the 76th minute through Alex Moucketou-Moussounda, who pounced on a loose ball from a corner to set up a nervy finish.

Despite late pressure from Gabon, Mozambique held firm to secure a landmark victory that significantly boosts their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.

The result leaves Mozambique level on points with group leaders Cameroon and Ivory Coast, while Gabon now face a crucial final group match against Ivory Coast.
