Brazilian football star Neymar has signed a six-month contract extension with Santos, the club where he started his career, as he aims to make a comeback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“I followed my heart. Santos is not just a club to me — it’s home, it’s where it all began,” the 33-year-old said in a statement on Tuesday.
Neymar returned to Santos in January after a tough spell at Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, where he managed only seven appearances in 17 months due to injuries. His short-term contract with Santos was set to expire on June 30, but he has now committed to stay until the end of 2025.
Since rejoining Santos, Neymar has played 12 matches and scored three goals. In his last league game, he was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for scoring with his hand against Botafogo.
Santos are currently struggling in the league and sit just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
Neymar has faced criticism in recent months — not only for his performances, but also for attending the Rio Carnival and playing in the Kings League (a seven-a-side celebrity tournament) while still recovering from injuries.
Despite being Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 international goals, Neymar has yet to win a World Cup. His efforts have been hampered by injuries and tournament exits. He was recalled for World Cup qualifiers in March but had to pull out due to a thigh injury.
Brazil’s new coach, Carlo Ancelotti, left him out of the squad announced in May, explaining: “Neymar has just come back from injury. Everyone knows how important he is to this team, and we’re counting on him — but only when he’s fully fit.”
