Nigerian BET dominance: Talent or Bias?

Nigerian artists have dominated the BET Award for Best International Act since 2010, with stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Tems, and Ayra Starr racking up multiple wins.

This reflects Afrobeats’ global rise, fueled by Nigeria’s vibrant music industry, streaming platforms, and collaborations with Western artists. Burna Boy’s four victories and Tems’ historic 2022 win highlight Nigeria’s influence, further validated by the Grammy’s 2024 African Music category.

However, some question if bias favors Nigeria’s larger market and media presence over talents from Ghana or South Africa. The 2024 win by South Africa’s Tyla shows diversity, but Ghana’s absence from recent nominations fuels debate. The voting process, blending academy and fan input, may tilt toward Nigeria’s global fanbase.

Nigeria’s success stems from undeniable talent and market strength, but transparency in BET’s selection could address bias concerns. The awards remain a key stage for African excellence
