‘Our best wasn’t enough’ — Nwabali speaks after DR Congo defeat

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has spoken for the first time since Nigeria lost to DR Congo in the World Cup playoff, saying the team did all they could but it still “wasn’t enough” to qualify.

Nigeria were beaten 4–3 on penalties after the match ended 1–1 following extra time. Nwabali saved two kicks during the shootout, but misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi proved costly.

DR Congo’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, scored the final penalty that sent his team into the intercontinental playoffs and ended Nigeria’s journey.

In a message posted on Instagram, Nwabali apologised to Nigerians and said he understands their frustration because he was once just a fan before becoming the team’s goalkeeper.

“I know how it feels giving you a disappointing night. We gave everything for the badge,” he said, adding that the players “take full responsibility” for the defeat.

His message is the first major reaction from the squad after the loss.
