Team GB Sevens women's captain Abbie Brown will miss the Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to a hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old was inconsolable after losing the chance to compete in the French capital and will not be able to avenge her fourth-place finishes at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

Had Brown been included, she would have ranked alongside Jasmine Joyce as being one of only two British rugby players to appear at three Olympic Games.

She said on social media: "One of the most emotional and hardest two weeks of my career.

"Heartbroken, gutted and truly devastated, but this is sport and it's not all sunshine and rainbows.

"Hamstring is now attached, and I can’t wait to be the best cheerleader there is for my girls this summer."

The women’s rugby sevens Olympics tournament begins on July 28, while the men need to secure qualification by winning the Olympic repechage tournament which takes place in Monaco this weekend.
