Galatasaray Slams Refereeing After 3-0 Victory Over Fenerbahçe
Galatasaray has launched a fierce attack on Turkish referees, accusing officials of “evil” influence following their dominant 3-0 win over Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Süper Lig derby on Sunday.
The high-stakes encounter, which took place at Istanbul’s iconic stadium, saw Galatasaray leading 1-0 at halftime. However, the match was marred by controversial officiating, with the Süper Lig leaders claiming they were denied two clear penalties during the first half.
Furious Response from Galatasaray on Social Media
Taking to social media platform X, the club expressed their frustration with the refereeing, accusing officials of manipulating the game. “Despite these referees, we’re still leading 1-0. We see what you’re doing, your plans, the evil inside you. This order won’t go on like this,” Galatasaray wrote in their fiery posts.
The remarks sparked immediate outrage, given the intensity of the rivalry between the two Istanbul giants. This derby often carries significant implications for the title race, and the controversy surrounding the officiating only added fuel to an already volatile encounter.
Galatasaray Extends Lead to 7 Points in Title Race
Galatasaray went on to extend their lead in the second half, securing a dominant 3-0 victory, which pushed them seven points clear of Fenerbahçe with just three matches left in the season. Victor Osimhen opened the scoring for the hosts, followed by goals from Barış Alper Yılmaz and Lucas Torreira to seal the win.
Fenerbahçe’s Disappointment and Referee Controversies
Fenerbahçe’s frustrations were compounded after they missed a first-half penalty, and goalkeeper Ederson was sent off by referee Yasin Kol, leaving the visitors to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
These explosive comments come at a particularly sensitive time for Turkish football, where issues with refereeing have been a recurring source of controversy. In 2023, the assault of referee Halil Umut Meler by Faruk Koca, president of Ankaragücü, led to a suspension of matches across the league, while several clubs, including Fenerbahçe, have recently staged walk-offs in protest over refereeing decisions.
Tensions with Turkish Football Federation Rise
Galatasaray’s criticism also comes amid mounting tensions with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF). The club’s president, Dursun Aydın Özbek, recently announced that Galatasaray had suspended all relations with the TFF’s current leadership due to ongoing dissatisfaction with the state of refereeing in the league.
Adding to the pressure on Turkish football, the TFF previously suspended 149 referees and assistant referees following an investigation into betting-related activity involving officials, further deepening the rift between clubs and match officials.
Rising Tensions as the Title Race Intensifies
With the title race entering its final stretch, Galatasaray’s latest remarks are likely to worsen already strained relations, keeping the spotlight on refereeing standards as the season draws to a close.
