Hollywood star Tom Cruise has won his first Oscar. The ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun’ actor received an honorary award at the 16th edition of the Governors Awards on Sunday.

Speaking about the recognition, Cruise said, “Making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”

The award was presented by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, who praised Cruise’s long career. “Writing a four-minute speech to celebrate Tom Cruise’s 45-year career is what is known, in this town, as a mission impossible. Tonight, we celebrate. We celebrate not just a filmography, we celebrate a lifetime of work,” he said.

At 63, Cruise has been nominated for an Oscar four times but had never won a competitive award. This honorary Oscar marks the first time he has received the industry’s highest recognition.
