Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has defended the club’s decision to sack manager Ange Postecoglou, despite the Australian leading the team to their first trophy in 17 years.
Postecoglou guided Spurs to victory in the UEFA Europa League last month, but a disappointing 17th-place finish in the Premier League led to his dismissal.
In his first year, we finished fifth, and in his second year we were thrilled to win a trophy,” Levy said.
“But we want to compete at the highest level across all competitions. That’s why we decided a change was needed. It was not an easy decision emotionally, but we believe it’s the right one for the future of the club.” Levy stressed that the club’s ambitions remain high, with a strong focus on winning the Premier League and Champions League — titles Spurs have never won. We’ve won a European trophy, but it’s not enough. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. That’s the level we are aiming for,” he added.
Postecoglou, who joined Tottenham from Celtic in 2023, becomes the 12th manager to leave the club under Levy’s 25-year leadership. Thomas Frank now takes over as the 13th permanent manager. Levy praised Frank’s qualities and said he was impressed by both his personality and technical skills.
“Whenever you appoint a new manager, it’s a fresh start. Thomas is highly intelligent, a great communicator, and a good human being. Those traits, along with his football knowledge, made him the right choice,” Levy said.
Frank will now be tasked with building on the Europa League success and improving Tottenham’s domestic form in the upcoming season.
