Arsenal’s hopes of signing Vinicius Jr have suffered a major blow after the Brazilian reportedly made it clear that his priority is to remain at Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, creating uncertainty over his future and attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Arsenal are understood to be monitoring the situation as manager Mikel Arteta searches for another world-class attacker capable of strengthening his squad.
Reports had suggested that the Premier League champions were exploring the financial requirements of a possible deal and could make Vinicius one of the highest-paid players in the club’s history.
However, the Brazilian is reportedly determined to resolve his future with Real Madrid rather than force an immediate move to England.
The Spanish giants are also confident that an agreement can be reached and have no intention of allowing one of their most valuable players to leave easily.
Contract talks are expected to resume after Vinicius returns from his post-World Cup break in his hometown of São Gonçalo, Brazil.
Why Vinicius Does Not Want to Leave Madrid for Free
Spanish journalist Tomás Roncero claimed that Vinicius has been telling close friends that he feels indebted to Real Madrid for believing in him at the beginning of his career.
The winger joined the Spanish club from Flamengo in 2018 after Real Madrid agreed a deal worth about €45 million while he was still a highly rated teenager.
According to Roncero, Vinicius believes it would be wrong to leave the club without Real Madrid receiving a transfer fee.
“I can’t leave Madrid for free because Madrid took me in when I was 18, from a humble family, with a difficult social and personal situation, and they believed in me,” Vinicius reportedly told those close to him.
“They paid €45 million when it was just a gamble, a promise, nothing more. Madrid has given me everything. I can’t leave without leaving a single euro in the bank.”
Roncero stressed that the comments were what Vinicius had allegedly been telling his friends and not a public statement issued by the player.
He added that the winger’s representatives could still take a tougher position when negotiations with Real Madrid resume.
The major disagreement is believed to centre on the financial terms of a new contract and Vinicius’ position among the club’s highest earners.
Real Madrid remain keen to retain him, while head coach Jose Mourinho reportedly considers the Brazilian an important part of his plans for the new season.
Vinicius has grown into one of the most influential players at the Bernabéu since arriving from Flamengo.
He has played a major role in the club’s domestic and European success, scoring important goals and helping Madrid win several trophies, including La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
Arsenal’s interest could still become significant if contract negotiations collapse and Real Madrid decide to sell rather than risk losing him without a transfer fee in 2027.
For now, however, the winger’s reported preference is to sign a new contract and continue his career in Spain.
The coming weeks are expected to determine whether Real Madrid can meet his demands and finally bring an end to the uncertainty surrounding his future.
