Nigerian international forward Kelechi Iheanacho has explained that the vision and ambition of Turkish club Bursaspor were the primary drivers behind his unexpected free transfer.
The 29-year-old forward opted to join the TFF First League side on a three-year contract despite strong interest from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, where he spent a successful campaign helping the Hoops win a domestic double.
“When I heard the project they have and how they want to go all the way to the Super League and to play in Europe as well, I said this is a big project and it’s very good for me to come and be involved and help the team.” Kelechi Iheanacho said.
Contract breakdown at Celtic
Iheanacho’s decision to head to Turkey came after extended contract negotiations with Celtic stalled. Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill confirmed that while both the coaching staff and the player wanted to extend his stay at Parkhead following his pivotal goals during their trophy-winning season, the two parties were ultimately unable to resolve financial terms.
With negotiations reaching a deadlock, Bursaspor stepped in with a long-term proposal that convinced the former Manchester City, Leicester City, and Sevilla striker to spearhead their promotion campaign.
