In a dramatic twist that’s lighting up gossip feeds, medical regulators in Nigeria have suspended three top doctors amid allegations of negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Esege, the late son of celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege.

According to the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel, the trio  including Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, the medical director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos, alongside an anaesthesiologist and the chief medical officer of another pediatric facility have been barred from practising in Nigeria while the case heads to the disciplinary tribunal.

The suspensions follow findings of a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct in how the toddler was handled before and during a series of procedures that were meant to prepare him for emergency treatment abroad.

Investigators say the child was referred from Atlantis Hospital to Euracare for diagnostics and prep for a medical evacuation when things went horribly wrong. Ten other doctors were also flagged for potential misconduct, while eight were cleared.

The case has sparked intense public debate about medical standards and accountability in Nigerian healthcare  and fans of the author are watching closely as the saga unfolds.
