The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, to lead the team to at least the semi-final stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
SCORENigeria reports that Chelle met with the NFF Technical Committee in Abuja on Monday, where both parties agreed on what the federation described as a “realistic target” for the national team.
The NFF also asked the coach to inject fresh and younger players into the squad, following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Officials say the team needs new energy and a long-term rebuild.
Chelle is expected to announce a 28-man provisional list for AFCON 2025 before the end of the week.
Nigeria is drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda. The Super Eagles will open their campaign on December 23 against Tanzania.
Nigeria finished as runners-up at the last AFCON held in Côte d’Ivoire.
