Atlético Madrid produced a ruthless attacking display on Tuesday night, thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Playing at the Metropolitano Stadium, Diego Simeone’s men took control from the opening minutes, punishing a series of defensive blunders by the visitors to build a commanding lead.

Marcos Llorente opened the scoring after just six minutes when a costly mistake by Spurs goalkeeper Antonín Kinský gifted Atletico possession, allowing the Spaniard to finish calmly into the bottom corner.

Moments later, Antoine Griezmann doubled Atletico’s advantage after defender Micky van de Ven slipped inside the box, leaving the French forward with a simple finish.

Tottenham’s defensive nightmare continued soon after when another error from Kinský handed Atletico a third goal, with Julián Álvarez tapping into an empty net. The blunder forced Spurs to replace their goalkeeper just 17 minutes into the match.

Atletico piled on the misery in the 22nd minute as Robin Le Normand headed home to make it 4–0, completing a blistering start by the hosts.

Spurs managed to respond before the break through Pedro Porro, who reduced the deficit with a well-taken strike.

However, Atletico restored their dominance in the second half as Álvarez grabbed his second goal of the night to make it 5–1.

Dominic Solanke scored a late consolation for Tottenham, but the damage had already been done.

The emphatic result leaves Atletico in firm control of the tie ahead of the second leg in London, with Tottenham now facing a daunting task to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
