President Donald Trump on Friday confirmed that the suspected Charlie Kirk‘s shooter is now in custody.
Trump, speaking on Fox & Friends, said the man was turned in by “someone very close to him,” after a minister and a U.S. Marshal worked behind the scenes to secure his surrender. The suspect’s father, reports said, also urged him to give up.
Authorities later identified the alleged gunman as Tyler Robinson, 22, who was arrested late Thursday night in Utah after a 36-hour manhunt. CNN reported that Robinson confessed to his father before he was taken in.
Officials have not disclosed a motive, but investigators earlier said ammunition linked to the shooter carried engravings tied to transgender and antifascist ideology. Prosecutors say Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted.
Kirk, 31, a staunch Trump ally and founder of Turning Point USA, was killed by a single sniper shot while addressing students at Utah Valley University. His death sent shockwaves across the conservative movement, with Trump ordering flags flown at half-staff until Sunday evening.
