Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has insisted that Nigeria should have secured a victory against Poland during their international friendly match on Wednesday, which ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw. Speaking to reporters in the post-match mixed zone, the Fulham center-back expressed disappointment that the team threw away the lead twice during the encounter at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw. Bassey noted that conceding critical goals late in both halves proved to be the team’s undoing and highlighted areas where the squad needs to sharpen up.
Nigeria took an early lead in the 23rd minute of the clash under head coach Eric Chelle, thanks to a well-worked opener from forward Terem Moffi. However, the Polish side managed to restore parity just before the halftime whistle blew when Kacper Potulski capitalised on a lapse in the Super Eagles’ defense.
Disrupted arrival times affect team cohesion, says defender
The Super Eagles looked set to walk away with a hard-fought away win after second-half substitute Paul Onuachu successfully converted a penalty to put Nigeria back in front 2-1. The team held onto the advantage until deep into stoppage time. Five minutes into added time, a spectacular long-range strike from Przemysław Wiśniewski flew past the Nigerian goalkeeper, rescuing a dramatic late draw for the hosts.
“We should have got the win. Two late goals in both halves. It shows there was something we could adjust.”
