Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained the tactical reasoning behind his decision to make seven substitutions at halftime during Nigeria’s international friendly against Poland. The high-profile match, which took place on Wednesday at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw, ultimately ended in a hard-fought 2-2 draw. Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle revealed that the massive squad rotation was necessitated by several players struggling physically after already starting their post-season summer holidays.
The Franco-Malian tactician noted that managing the workload of a squad transitioning from a grueling club season into vacation mode was a major challenge. He explained that a significant portion of his starting lineup lacked the match fitness required for ninety minutes of high-intensity international football.
“They were already on vacation. That is why I made seven changes at halftime. Our captain usually does a lot more on the pitch, but after 60 minutes, he was practically gone.”
Structural overhaul fails to secure away victory in Warsaw
The seven players introduced by Chelle at the start of the second half included defenders Semi Ajayi and Zaidu Sanusi, midfielders Raphael Onyedika and Tochukwu Nnadi, alongside attackers Paul Onuachu, Rafiu Durosinmi, and Philip Otele. To accommodate the sweeping changes, the coach withdrew his entire starting frontline and several key defensive figures, including Emmanuel Fernandez, Bruno Onyemaechi, Terem Moffi, Igoh Ogbu, Frank Onyeka, and Akor Adams.
While the structural overhaul initially paid dividends when substitute Paul Onuachu restored Nigeria’s lead in the second half, the Super Eagles were ultimately undone by a late stoppage-time equalizer from Poland’s Przemysław Wiśniewski. Despite missing out on a victory, Chelle maintained that prioritizing player health and assessing the depth of his squad under exhausting conditions was the correct approach for an international friendly window.
