Nigerian singer Chike has revealed the strict relationship advice he received from his mother, urging him never to settle down with a woman who is not working.
The music star made the disclosure during a recent interview, where he spoke candidly about expectations in relationships and the importance of having a partner who contributes meaningfully.
According to Chike, his mother repeatedly warned him against choosing a partner without a clear source of livelihood or purpose, stressing that love alone is not enough to sustain a relationship.
“I think everyone should look for a partner that adds value,” he said.
He explained that being with someone who is not productive could place an overwhelming burden on one partner, especially in situations where additional family responsibilities are involved.
Chike added that his mother cautioned him to avoid relationships where a partner appears to be working but is not genuinely independent, noting that such arrangements often lead to one-sided responsibilities.
He further pointed out that entering a relationship with someone who is financially dependent — particularly if they are also responsible for supporting their extended family — could mean inheriting those obligations.
The singer’s comments have since sparked conversations online, with many weighing in on the balance between love, responsibility, and financial independence in modern relationships.
