Chelsea survived a first-half red card to earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues were reduced to 10 men in the 38th minute after Moises Caicedo was sent off following a VAR review for a foul on Mikel Merino. Despite the setback, Chelsea struck first.
Trevoh Chalobah put the hosts ahead three minutes into the second half, rising highest to head in Reece James’ delivery.
Arsenal responded in the 59th minute when Mikel Merino powered in an equalising header from a Bukayo Saka cross to restore parity.
The Gunners pushed late on, with Jurrien Timber heading wide in stoppage time as Viktor Gyokeres lurked behind him for what could have been the winner.
The draw means Arsenal end the weekend five points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Chelsea remain third, just behind Manchester City.
The match was tense and scrappy, with several fouls and stoppages. Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live that the players – not the referee – made it messy:
“I don’t think Anthony Taylor’s had a bad game… the players have something to do with that.”
Fans reacting online said Chelsea showed more fight despite their numerical disadvantage, while Arsenal looked “jaded” and below their usual intensity.
Both teams, however, walked away with a point from a heated London derby.
