Jose Mourinho has packed his bags at Fenerbahce, just over a year into the job.
The Portuguese tactician’s exit comes barely 48 hours after the Turkish giants were dumped out of the Champions League play-offs by Benfica, sparking a storm around the club.
In a terse statement, Fenerbahce confirmed they had “parted ways” with the 62-year-old, adding only: “We wish him success in his future career.”
Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, finished second in the Turkish league during his only season in charge. But true to his reputation, his stay in Istanbul was marred by controversy.
At one point, rivals Galatasaray vowed to drag him to court, accusing him of making “racist statements” after a heated 0-0 draw in February. Mourinho denied the charge, calling himself “the opposite of racist,” before counter-suing Galatasaray for damages worth 1.9m Turkish Lira (£41,000).
The outspoken coach also picked constant fights with referees, earning himself a four-match ban — later reduced to two — for his comments after the Galatasaray clash.
