Popular Nigerian comedian, Kevin Chinedu, widely known for his satirical “Governor Amuneke” character, has alleged that officials of a political party attempted to bribe him with foreign currency to alter his content critical of governance.
Chinedu made the revelation on Monday during an interview on Arise 360, a programme on ARISE TV, where he spoke on the growing pressure faced by content creators who use humour to hold public office holders accountable.
According to him, the approach came at a particularly challenging time in his personal life, shortly after his wife underwent a Caesarean section, leaving him with mounting financial obligations.
“They said they were going to change my life, that I’m earning crumbs… give me dollars. They mentioned that my colleagues are in the game,” he said.
The comedian, however, declined to disclose the identity of the political party involved, referring to it only as “Amuneke’s party,” a nod to his fictional character, while warning against speculation.
“Don’t mention names, trust me, don’t mention names,” he added.
Chinedu further revealed that he was invited to Abuja with promises of a life-changing financial reward but insisted he rejected the offer despite the pressure.
“I had a lot of bills on my head and I just heard, ‘come to Abuja, let’s change your life — dollars upon dollars,’” he said.
Maintaining that he has built his career on integrity, the skit maker said he could not compromise his values for financial gain.
“I’ve been here for a long time and I’ve never been involved in anything illegal or influenced because of money. If I’m going to do something, it has to be because I want to do it,” he stated.
On whether associates advised him otherwise, Chinedu said his close circle shares similar principles and had also resisted similar inducements.
“I don’t have friends that are easily overwhelmed with money. I have people with principles… they’ve approached them too,” he said.
His comments highlight ongoing concerns about attempts to influence digital creators in Nigeria’s evolving media space, particularly those using satire as a tool for political commentary.
