Nigerian chef Hilda Baci has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, weighing 8,780 kilogrammes (19,356 lb 9 oz).

Announcing the achievement on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), Baci wrote: “We have done it again #nigeria #hildabaci.”

The record was set on Friday in Victoria Island, Lagos, in partnership with food brand Gino and has now been officially confirmed by Guinness World Records. GWR posted: “New record: Largest serving of Nigerian style jollof rice – 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) achieved by Hilda Baci and Gino in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.”

The event drew a large crowd of supporters, celebrities, and food enthusiasts. Nollywood actress Funke Akindele joined Baci on stage to stir the tomato base, while the First Lady of Ogun State, Bamidele Abiodun, was also in attendance. Other notable guests included dancer Kaffy, Tomike Adeoye, Enioluwa, Peller, Veekee James, Femi Atere, Tacha, Papaya, Samuel Banks, Alex Unusual, Folagbade Banks, and Spyro.

Speaking to journalists, Baci explained she used 200 bags of rice for the record. The measuring crane and scale used to weigh the dish could handle up to 20,000 kilogrammes, including the custom-made pot.

She said: “When we started, we weighed the pot. Every ingredient had to be included in the final weight. By the time I was done making 5,000 kilogrammes, I hoped to reach 17,000 to 18,000 kilogrammes. Including the pot, that’s about 20,000.”

The 200 bags of rice cooked amounted to roughly 4,000 kilogrammes, enough to feed 20,000 people, Baci added.
