Hope for Super Eagles as Iran hints withdrawal from World Cup 2026 after US strikes

Tensions on the global stage have sparked hope for the Nigeria national football team Super Eagles, as Iran signalled it may withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following recent military strikes by the United States and Israel.

The escalation followed a series of air attacks attributed to the United States on Iranian soil, which Tehran described as unprecedented aggression. In response, Iran’s government reportedly launched missile strikes on targets in neighbouring countries. The unfolding conflict has also drawn in other regional and global powers, with British forces reportedly deployed to protect allied interests.

With the 2026 World Cup set to kick off in the United States, Canada and Mexico in June — and just months away — the prospect of Iran’s involvement is now uncertain.

Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, is quoted by Spanish outlet Marca expressing serious reservations about the team’s ability to compete. “With what happened today and with that attack by the United States, it is unlikely that we can look forward to the cup,” Taj said, adding that sports authorities would ultimately decide on Iran’s fate at the tournament.

Iran had been drawn in Group E alongside New Zealand national football team, Belgium national football team and Egypt national football team, with its opening match scheduled for the morning of June 16, 2026.

As the diplomatic crisis deepens, the football world watches closely — aware that geopolitics could reshape one of the sport’s biggest stages.
