Veteran Nigerian entertainer and social activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has opened up about the unusual and deep bond he shares with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing it as an “uncommon relationship” rooted in mutual respect, understanding, and concern for Nigeria’s future.

In a post on X, Charly Boy acknowledged that many Nigerians were initially surprised by their closeness, given his reputation as a critic of government. He said people often wonder how someone who constantly challenges authority could be so connected with a former head of state, but emphasised that life isn’t “black and white”  and that respect and understanding can build bridges where least expected.

Charly Boy explained that Obasanjo sees qualities in him that others sometimes overlook, such as courage, consistency, and a steadfast commitment to truth. In return, he said he views Obasanjo not merely as a former military leader and president but as an elder who has weathered war, leadership pressures, and national challenges with resilience.

He stressed that their relationship isn’t about public spectacle but thoughtful dialogue. Conversations between them, he said, often involve debates about Nigeria’s issues and can include disagreements yet always without bitterness, with respect remaining intact.

A standout moment in their friendship was when Obasanjo personally hosted the launch of Charly Boy’s autobiography, 999. The entertainer described the event as the most significant of his career, symbolising recognition and honour far beyond just selling books.

Charly Boy concluded that their unique bond shows that even in a divided nation, bridges can be built when strong personalities choose respect over ego  setting a powerful example for others.
