Hollywood star Jim Carrey has shut down bizarre online claims that he was “cloned” after his appearance at the 51st César Awards in Paris sparked wild conspiracy theories.
The 64-year-old actor stunned fans when he stepped out to receive an honorary award at the prestigious French ceremony, often described as France’s equivalent of the Oscars. However, shortly after photos from the event surfaced online, social media was flooded with speculation about his altered look.
Some users suggested he had undergone cosmetic surgery, while others pushed the far-fetched claim that the actor had been replaced by a “clone.”
Responding to the controversy, Carrey’s representative firmly confirmed that the actor personally attended the event, dismissing the rumours as baseless.
Further clarifying the situation, Gregory Caulier, general delegate of the César Awards, described Carrey’s appearance as “a historic moment” and insisted there was nothing unusual about his presence.
“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation,” Caulier said.
He revealed that the actor spent eight months preparing and practising his acceptance speech in French and was supported at the ceremony by 12 family members and close friends.
Despite these confirmations, conspiracy theorists pointed to perceived differences in his eye colour and the fact that he signed autographs with his right hand — even though he is widely believed to be left-handed — as supposed “proof” of a double.
The drama intensified after British drag performer Alexis Stone, known for elaborate celebrity transformations, shared an Instagram post captioned “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” alongside images of a prosthetic mask.
The post, which appeared partly AI-generated, left many confused, with celebrities including Megan Fox and Lisa Rinna reacting in disbelief in the comments.
However, there is no evidence Stone impersonated Carrey at the ceremony.
Beyond the internet frenzy, Carrey’s speech at the awards struck an emotional tone. Speaking entirely in French, he thanked his daughter Jane, grandson Jackson and his partner Min Ah.
“Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever. Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah. I love you, Min Ah,” he said.
The actor also reflected on his French ancestry, noting that his great-great-great-great-grandfather left Saint-Malo for Canada centuries ago, describing the award as a “full circle” moment for his family.
Carrey’s appearance at the ceremony also reignited conversations about his retirement plans. In 2022, while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he revealed he was “probably” stepping away from acting, saying he had “enough” and wanted to focus on painting and his spiritual life.
However, he later returned to reprise his role as Dr Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and is set to appear again in the fourth instalment scheduled for 2027.
