Football star Lionel Messi is reportedly thinking about leaving Inter Miami before his contract ends in December 2025. This comes after the team’s recent 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup.
According to sports journalist Esteban Edul, Messi is considering a move to a more competitive league to prepare better for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he is expected to lead Argentina in defending their title.
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 and signed a deal until the end of 2025, with an option to extend it by another year. However, talks about extending the deal have been put on hold, and sources say the player is carefully weighing his options.
Although he is still under contract, there are questions about whether staying in Major League Soccer (MLS) offers him enough top-level competition as the World Cup approaches.
Sports reporter Fabrizio Romano shared that both Messi and the club are still open to continuing their relationship. He said:
“Leo is under contract until the end of 2025. The reality is that both parties are interested in continuing the relationship. The necessary steps are being taken with the right mindset to make it happen.”
Messi’s family situation could also influence his decision. Journalist Guillem Balague told BBC Sport that Messi and his family are happy in Miami. His wife, Antonella, works with brands like Tiffany and Adidas, and their three sons play in youth football teams. Messi is often seen cheering them on from the sidelines.
After a tough time in Paris with PSG, where he reportedly struggled personally, life in the U.S. has been a more peaceful chapter for Messi. But with the next World Cup getting closer, fans and analysts are watching closely to see what his next move will be.
