John Obi Mikel has dismissed Cesc Fàbregas as a potential candidate for the Chelsea managerial role, instead backing former teammate Filipe Luís as the best choice to take over at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are currently on the lookout for a new manager after parting ways with Liam Rosenior, and several names have been linked to the position as the club evaluates its options.

Mikel: Fabregas Not Ready for Chelsea Job Yet

Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel acknowledged the progress Fàbregas has made at Italian side Como but stated that the Chelsea job may be too soon for the Spanish midfielder as he continues to develop his managerial skills.

“I think for me, it’d be too early for Fabregas. I like Fabregas and we can all see the success he’s having with Como in the Italian league, but I think it’s a bit too early. Give him a couple more seasons to establish himself and gain more experience,” Mikel said.

While Mikel is impressed by Fàbregas’ work at Como, he believes the role at Chelsea requires a manager with a bit more experience at the top level.

Mikel Backs Filipe Luís for the Chelsea Role

Instead of Fàbregas, Mikel singled out Filipe Luís as the standout candidate among the names being considered for the Chelsea job. Despite Luís’ relatively short stint in management with Flamengo, Mikel believes the Brazilian has the qualities needed to succeed at a club like Chelsea.

Mikel praised the structure and identity Luís has already instilled in his Flamengo team, particularly highlighting their performances on the international stage, which he believes demonstrate the qualities required for success at the highest level.

“On Filipe Luís, he is a fantastic manager and his team played fantastic football in the Club World Cup and had an objective of how they wanted to play,” Mikel explained.

“There was a clear structure, playing with purpose, that’s how you know someone can become a top manager,” he added.

Although Luís may not have extensive managerial experience, Mikel believes that the job he has done with Flamengo and the way his team plays shows a lot of promise.

“Maybe he doesn’t have the experience right now, but from the job he did with Flamengo and the way his team plays, there is something to be excited about,” Mikel said. “There’s an expectation of what you feel you can achieve and that’s what I like about Filipe Luís. Maybe it’s too early, but of all the three managers mentioned, if they go with any of them, I’ll probably say Filipe Luís.”

Chelsea’s Managerial Search Continues

Chelsea, who are currently being overseen by interim boss Calum McFarlane until the end of the season, are taking their time with the decision, with reports suggesting that the club is also considering other undisclosed candidates as they weigh their next appointment.

Mikel’s support for Luís comes as Chelsea continues to search for a manager who can bring stability and success to the club after a period of turmoil. With his backing of Luís, Mikel has added his voice to the growing list of supporters for the Brazilian manager, who is gaining attention for the positive direction he has taken Flamengo in recent years.
